BELLEVILLE, ON – The Durham Lords men's basketball team opened their preseason at the Loyalist Fall Classic this weekend, defeating Sherbrooke and falling to Niagara.
 
The Lords kicked off exhibition play against Cégep de Sherbrooke, and the Durham proved to have a hungry offence from the start. After a 28-9 lead in the first quarter, Durham added another 20 points in the second to take a 48-30 lead into halftime.
 
Angelo Sarsonas recorded 11 points in the first quarter, and then with a different lineup hitting the court in the second Kanskie Simon led the team with 11.
 
Durham outscored their opponents 25-22 in the third quarter, showing no signs of slowing down, before nearly reaching the century point. Ultimately, the Lords finished the evening with a 97-68 victory.
 
Simon led the team with 21 points, 10 rebounds and an assist. Adam Hosseini finished the night with 17 points, Keeth Tennant and Sarsonas both posted 12 and Oshane Taylor-Douglas made it five players with double-digit points as he recorded 10.
 
Sunday was a closer affair, as the Lords found themselves trailing the Niagara Knights 24-15 through one quarter of play. Durham clawed back in the second quarter, outscoring the knights 24-18 and only trailed by three points going into the locker rooms for halftime.
 
The Lords spread the ball around in the third quarter with six different players contributing points. With 24 points in the frame, the Lords made it a one-point going into the fourth quarter. It was a back-and-forth final quarter, but at the end of the day the Lords would come up short – losing 87-82 to end the weekend.
 
Tennant posted 23 points, seven rebounds and three assists against the Knights. Taylor-Douglas finished with 16 points and 10 assists.
 
Durham will hit the court again at the David Stewart Tip-Off Tournament in Oshawa on Saturday, October 15. The invitational begins with a 1:00 PM matchup against the Conestoga Condors.
