OSHAWA, ON – The Durham Lords men's basketball team are 2022 David Stewart Tip-Off Tournament champions.
On the first day of the tournament, Durham played twice and won twice. They began the day with an 80-73 win over Conestoga. Matching up with the defending OCAA champions in the afternoon, the Lords defeated the Humber Hawks 80-75 to stay undefeated through one day.
The second day would see the Lords play in the final game of the day against the Lambton Lions. The formula was simple, a win for the Lords would win them the tournament.
It was a back-and-forth first quarter, but the Lords came out of it with a four-point lead. After outscoring the hosts 20-13 in the second quarter, Lambton held a 37-34 lead going into halftime.
Durham bounced back with a massive third quarter. Outscoring the Lions 30-8, the Lords took the lead back with a large 19-point gap going into the final quarter. The Lords tacked on 17 more points in the fourth and ultimately won the final game of the tournament 81-56.
Angelo Sarsonas was the team leader in points with 19. Additionally, he recorded five assists, three steals and three rebounds in the game. Three other Lords hit double-digit points with
Adam Hosseini reaching 15, and Kanskie Simon and Oshane Taylor-Douglas dropping 12 each.
Rebounds were nearly even, with Durham grabbing a total of 32 boards and Lambton grabbing 31. Turnovers were a storyline in the game, with the Lions turning the ball over to a suffocating Lords defence 20 times.
Finishing as the only team with an undefeated record, the Lords won the 2022 David Stewart Tip-Off Tournament with a 3-0 record.
