Lords wrap up home schedule with pair of wins against Sheridan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

OSHAWA, ON – The Durham Lords women's softball team wrapped up their home schedule for the 2022 OCAA season on Tuesday evening, sweeping the Sheridan Bruins.

Durham put the game essentially out of reach in the first inning, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first to take a 5-0 lead. Grace Hearns (Napanee, ON) found her way on the scoreboard first, hitting a two RBI home run with Natalie Clemens (Marmora, ON) on base.

With the bases loaded, Hannah Oke (Brooklin, ON) reached on a fielder's choice, advancing all runners at least a base, including Abi Suffel (Whitby, ON) and Sydney Redick (Alvinston, ON) for the score. In the next at-bat, Ryleigh Easton (Marmora, ON) scored on a sacrifice fly to end the inning.

Hearns earned her second run of the game by the second inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly, taking a 6-0 lead. Oke would go on to score her sixth run of the season in the following frame, and then Sheridan found a spot on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth.

With Redick on base in the bottom of the fourth, Easton hit Durham's ninth triple of the season to advance the runner home and would later score herself in Oke's follow-up plate appearance.

The Lords ended the game in the bottom of the fifth inning as Jocelyn Shelton (Aylmer, ON) hit a two RBI double that would send Brynne Naworynski (Aurora, ON) and Arianne Pollon (Tisdale, SK) home for the 11-1 victory in five innings.

Glendinning pitched all 5.0 innings, striking out eight of 25 batters faced. She threw a total of 98 pitches in the game.

Prior to the second game, the umpiring crew, along with the Durham College athletics department, celebrated home plate umpire Doug Webster as he prepared to officiate his final game after 35-years in the sport.

Sheridan scored first this time, picking up a run in the top of the first on a fielder's choice. Clemens tied the game up in the bottom half of the frame, scoring on a wild pitch, before Hearns would do the exact same to take the lead two innings later. In what would be a four-run inning, Redick, Easton and Suffel also went on to add to the lead and make it a 5-1 game.

Durham mirrored the previous inning with a four run fourth inning, with Clemens, Hearns, Shelton and Mackenzie Williamson (Brooklin, ON) adding their names to the scoresheet.

Clemens scored from third on another wild pitch in the fifth inning, and like the first game, this would also be a five inning game as the Lords would cross home plate one more to end the game 11-1.

Redick pitched the first 4.0 innings, striking out three batters and only conceding one hit. Oke hit the mound in the fifth inning to close out the game. Oke faced three batters, striking out all three.

Before the evening begun, the Lords recognized Kylie Schofield (Oshawa, ON) as part of the annual graduating senior's ceremony celebrated at the final home game of every season.

Schofield is a Chemical Laboratory Technician from right here in Oshawa. Since joining the Durham Lords in 2021, she has posted a .400 batting average, scored five runs and hit 3 RBI's. She was a part of the Durham College 2021 OCAA gold medal winning women's softball team. In the classroom, she was recognized as an OCAA All-Academic award winner.

Kylie is considering furthering her education at Royal Roads University in Victoria, B.C., where she may study for a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science.

The Lords now turn their sights to the CCSA National Championship this weekend, where they are grouped with St. Clair College, UBC-Okanagan and the University of Toronto.
