Durham fall to St. Clair and UCBO to open CCSA National Championship

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WINDSOR, ON – The Durham Lords begun their 2022 CCSA National Championship on Friday, falling to the St. Clair Saints and UBC-Okanagan Heat.

St. Clair opened the scoring in the second inning, and it was a defensive showdown through four innings as the Saints went into the fifth inning with a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, the Saints scored two more on a two RBI single early in the inning. With two outs on the board, the Saints scored runs via back-to-back batters, with an RBI single followed by a two RBI single to extend their lead to six.

Durham went three up, three down in each of the final three innings of the game, being shut out by the OCAA-leading St. Clair Saints 6-0.

Grace Hearns (Napanee, ON) had a hit in the game, hitting a single in the bottom of the first inning and eventually stealing second.

Sydney Redick (Alvinston, ON) was the starting pitcher to begin the day, going 4.2 innings before Hannah Oke (Brooklin, ON) struck out two in her 2.1 inning showing.

In their second group stage game, the Lords matched up against UBC-Okanagan from the west coast. The first inning was high scoring in Durham's favour, beginning with two runs scored by Hearns and Brynne Naworynski (Aurora, ON) to get on the board for the first time at the championship.

Redick and Jocelyn Shelton (Aylmer, ON) both scored to expand the lead, and Ryleigh Easton (Bowmanville, ON) reached home on a wild pitch to take a 5-1 lead into the second inning. UBCO climbed their way back into the game with a three-run third inning to cut their deficit to one but would score five runs in the fifth for a 9-5 lead.

In the same inning, Oke hit a single to send Redick home, before Schofield singled with the bases loaded for Easton to score her second of the game. In the next at-bat, Hearns was walked with the bases loaded and a run scored by Oke brought the game within one.

In the sixth inning, the UBCO hit double digits after Simicak tripled and later scored on a wild pitch. In the bottom half of the inning, Abi Suffel (Whitby, ON) scored her first run of the day to make it a 10-9 game but after a scoreless seventh inning, the Lords came up short.

Two pitchers saw the mound for Durham against the Heat, with Emily Glendinning (Plattsville, ON) and striking out three batters in 4.1 innings pitched. Oke came in again for the second game, throwing for 2.2 innings.

Durham finish off the group stage on Saturday morning in a matchup with the University of Toronto.
