BELLEVILLE, ON – The Durham Lords women's volleyball team improve to 11-0 in league action on Wednesday evening with a win in three sets over the Loyalist Lancers. Continuing their streak, Durham have not lost a regular season match in the fall semester since 2017.
Durham went ahead 9-2 early in the first set, forcing an early Lancers timeout, and the Lords took 14 of the first 20 points scored in the opening frame. Loyalist found ways to score as they settled into the set, but Durham almost always had an answer - taking the first set 25-15.
In the second, Loyalist kept it close at the beginning, only trailing 8-7 to their visitors. But at the end of the set, the scoreline nearly mirrored the previous one as the Lords took it 25-16.
Loyalist was not going down without a fight, but the third set would ultimately be the last. With Durham leading 22-15, the Lancers scored six unanswered points to bring them within one. The Lords found their rhythm again, earning the final three points necessary to complete the sweep. Winning the third set 25-23, the Lords would take the match 3-0.
Kills were pretty evenly spread throughout the lineup, with Jessica Joensen (Brooklin, ON) smashing eight, Jessie Anatol (Ajax, ON) and Mia Hildebrandt (Winnipeg, MB) hitting seven each, Aislinn Pedersen (Hamilton, ON) scoring six, Amanda Larsen (Toronto, ON) earning five and Jill Batsford (Kingston, ON) putting three over the net.
Splitting playmaking duties, Batsford and Brooke Young (Chestermere, AB) each recorded 10 assists. The Lords benefited from a eight service aces throughout the evening, with a trio coming from Pedersen, as well as Larsen.
Devyn Fraser (Uxbridge, ON) led the team in digs with nine, with Pedersen and Anatol not far behind with six and five, respectively.
The student-athletes will now turn their focus to their exam period before heading home for the holiday break.
