Box Score 2 OSHAWA, ON – The Durham Lords and Humber Hawks both grabbed a win each in a Wednesday evening doubleheader at Durham Field.
Following a scoreless first inning, the Hawks opened the scoring the with an RBI single in the top of the second before
Kaylen Wilson (Pickering, ON) tied it up in the bottom of the third.
It would continue to go back and forth, with both sides adding another run in the fifth inning before going scoreless in the sixth to head into the final frame all tied up.
In her only plate appearance of the game, Humber second baseman Jessica MacPherson hit a two-run home run to make it a 4-2 game. The Lords battled back as
Sydney Redick (Alvinston, ON) hit a sacrifice fly to send
Mackenzie Williamson (Brooklin, ON) home, but that wouldn't be enough as the Hawks came away with the 4-3 win.
After going 10-for-10 at the plate over the weekend, Durham College athlete of the week
Grace Hearns (Napanee, ON) made contact in her first two at bats of the first game, bringing in a run. Wilson,
Abi Suffel (Whitby, ON) and
Morgan Salter (Battersea, ON) also recorded hits in the outing.
Salter pitched all 7.0 innings, striking out 10 of 31 batters faced and only conceding four runs.
In the second half of the doubleheader, a single hit by Suffel in the top of the first opened the scoring as Hearns made her way to home plate. Humber responded in the bottom of the first with three runs, two of which the result of an error.
Durham came back to the plate with a response of their own as
Brynne Naworynski (Aurora, ON),
Natalie Clemens (Marmora, ON) and Hearns all crossed home to take the lead back. The Lords would double their opponents score as Clemens scored her second run of the game in the top of the fourth to make it a 6-3 game.
Clemens scored her third run of the game to start the sixth inning and Humber would add a run of their own to make it a three-run game again. Williamson and Clemens added a pair of runs and eventually gave the Lords a 9-4 win.
Accounting for a total of seven runs, Clemens scored four and Hearns scored three, while Williamson and Naworynski each registered one run.
Emily Glendinning (Plattsville, ON) threw 141 total pitches though 7.0 innings, striking out four and only giving up four hits in the game.
The Lords are back in action on Friday as the Conestoga Condors come to town for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 6:00 PM.
