DC complete weekend sweep ahead of nationals

OSHAWA, ON - Following two big wins against the OCAA-leading St. Clair Saints, the Durham College women's softball team completed the weekend sweep with a pair of wins against the Lambton Lions on Sunday afternoon.

The top of the first inning was eventful for Grace Hearns (Napanee, ON), who singled before later stealing second and then stealing third base. She would eventually score on a passed ball to give the Lords the early lead.

Innings two through four produced no offence and Lambton tied it in the top of the fifth on an error. The Lords responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning with Hearns and Natalie Clemens (Marmora, ON) both scoring on the same play.

Hannah Dykes (Courtice, ON) later hit a single with Pollon on second and she rounded third for home to give the Lords a three-run lead. 4-1 would be the final score as the Lords won their third game of the weekend.

Hearns finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs and a trio of stolen bases. Pollon also had a multi-hit showing, going 2-for-3 at the plate with one run.

Sydney Redick (Alvinston, ON) faced all 27 batters across seven innings, striking out five and only allowing four hits. She threw a total of 106 pitches in the outing.

The Lords established an early lead in the second game, scoring eight runs in the opening frame. Hearns scored twice, while Clemens, Jocelyn Shelton (Aylmer, ON), Chelsea Oke (Brooklin, ON), Ryleigh Easton (Bowmanville, ON) and Alana Smale (Port Perry, ON) all crossed home in the inning.

Easton scored her second of the game in the third inning before Smales scored her second, putting the Lords ahead 10-0.

Determined to put the game away, Chloe Showers (Uxbridge, ON) kicked off the runs party in the fourth inning as the first of nine runs scored in the frame.

Ahead 19-0, the Lords gave up a solo home run in the fourth as the Lions ruined the shutout, however four innings was all that was needed to decide the game.

Easton was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs and three RBI's. Hearns also led the way, making contact in all four at-bats with three runs and three RBI's. Six different Lords scored two or more runs.

On the mound, Emily Glendinning (Plattsville, ON) struck out four of 11 batters faced over 3.0 innings. Glendinning only conceded one hit and gave up zero runs. Morgan Salter (Battersea, ON) faced five batters over the course of one inning, striking out one and giving up a hit.

Tied at the top of the OCAA with an 18-2 record through 20 games, the Lords travel to Victoria, B.C., this week for the CCSA National Championship. They begin round robin play on Friday, with Western University, the University of Calgary and University of Victoria on the horizon.
