OTTAWA, ON - In their final game of the 2022-23 OCAA regular season, the Durham Lords women's basketball team suffered their second loss of the season to the undefeated Algonquin Wolves.
Durham ran into an absolutely suffocating Algonquin defence to begin the game and the Wolves went on an 11-0 run.
With 3:18 to go in the first quarter, the Lords scored their first bucket of the night with a jump shot made from Kendra Oliver (Ajax, ON). The Wolves replied with back-to-back layups to take a 15-2 lead.
In the final 55 seconds of the opening frame, the Lords scored seven points and held Algonquin to two as they worked to close the gap, trailing 16-9 after the first quarter.
Durham bounced back in the second quarter, outscoring the Wolves 14-13 to chip away at their deficit but still trailed 29-23 going into halftime.
The third quarter was mostly even and the Lords came within one point on several different occasions. A late surge by the Wolves put them up by nine through three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, the Wolves tightened up their defence one again and held the Lords to only four points in 10 minutes of play. The Wolves were able to take advantage of Durham shooting 7.7% with six turnovers in the quarter to score 15 points of their own and win the game by 20 to finish the regular season undefeated.
Ending the season with a 12-2 record, the Lords' only two losses came to the OCAA east leaders.
Emily Glendinning (Plattsville, ON) finished the night as the team leader in points with 11. Brianna Morrison also reached double-digit points with 10.
In the paint, Oliver grabbed 10 rebounds while Onika Leveridge (Scarborough, ON) had six and Daija Thompson (Whitby, ON) reached for five.
