OSHAWA, Ont. - Durham College women's basketball has added a new name to its roster, announcing the signing of guard Haniah Ahmed.
The Scarborough, Ont., native joins the Lords after a strong run through the club circuit and a standout high school career at Agincourt Collegiate Institute.
Standing 5-foot-2, Ahmed brings quickness and a competitive edge to the backcourt. "I'm looking forward to competing at the next level, developing my skills, and learning from my coaches and teammates," she said. "I can't wait to be part of the Durham Lords family, build lasting relationships and contribute to the team's success."
Ahmed arrives at Durham with a résumé that includes medals at the provincial level. She helped the Scarborough Blues capture bronze at provincials and earned a gold medal with DC Chameleons. Those experiences shaped her approach to the game—fast-paced, energetic and focused on winning plays.
"It's always been a dream to play at the college level, and being able to do this with my mom by my side means a lot."
For Ahmed, choosing Durham College was as much about the people as the program. "I've seen how inclusive and friendly the environment is, and everyone on the team has been super welcoming," she said. The culture fit stood out immediately, giving her confidence that this was the right place to grow both as a player and a person.
"Haniah plays with the kind of pace that's difficult to teach. She's constantly applying pressure, whether that's defensively, pushing the ball in transition or competing for every loose ball. Those are qualities that can change the flow of a game," said Head Coach Warren Williams. "She's eager to learn, embraces being coached, and we're looking forward to helping her continue developing her game over the next few years."
Ahmed will study Health and Fitness Promotion while suiting up for the Lords, balancing academics with her first season in the OCAA. She's clear about what she wants to bring to the court: energy, defence and a willingness to do whatever the team needs. "I know this experience will challenge me both on and off the court, and I'm excited to represent the program with hard work, determination, and pride," she said.
As she prepares for her rookie campaign, Ahmed is focused on earning her place in the rotation and helping the team compete.
Her mindset is simple: show up ready, stay coachable and keep the energy high. The Lords' coaching staff will look to harness her speed and defensive instincts as they build toward the upcoming season.
