Lords advance to OCAA Championship

OSHAWA, ON - With a win in straight sets over the Fanshawe Falcons, the Durham Lords women's volleyball team book their ticket to the 2023 OCAA Women's Volleyball Championship.

The first set began close, trading off points seemingly every play. However, Durham worked their way to a hot streak and widened the gap, eventually winning the first set 25-17.

In the opening frame, Katie Stewart (Gananoque, ON) smashed five kills of her own, with Amanda Larsen (Toronto, ON) and Mia Hildebrandt (Winnipeg, MB) each hitting three. The plays were driving through Brooke Young (Chestermere, AB), who registered eight assists in the first set alone.

Fanshawe had another hot start in the second set to keep up with the Lords in the opening minutes.

With a score line that once read 5-5, Durham scored seven consecutive points to more than double the Falcons on the board.

The Lords only conceded eight more points in the second set and continued to cruise to a 25-13 win.

With their season on the line in the third set, Fanshawe struggled to figure out the hosts - evident by the five consecutive points scored by the Lords to open the third.

Fanshawe put up a fight, surpassing their second set total, but Durham was too strong and the Falcons saw their season come to an end in three sets with the Lords winning the third 25-15.

Stewart finished the afternoon with 16 kills on 25 total attempts, leading the team.

Larsen and Hildebrandt were tied for second on the squad in kills with six each.

Young generated 30 assists on the day, with Jessica Joensen (Brooklin, ON) accounting for a pair.

At the service line, the Lords hit 11 aces. Young served three, while Joensen, Stewart and Larsen each served two to lead the team.

In front of the net, Hildebrandt blocked three shots, Larsen had a pair of blocks and Jessie Anatol (Ajax, ON) and Joensen each blocked one.

With their win, the Lords advance to the 2023 OCAA Women's Volleyball Championship. In the quarter-final, Durham is scheduled to take on the host Sheridan Bruins.
