Box Score 2 WINDSOR, ON - In another segment of the inaugural Sledgehammer Series, the Durham College men's baseball team split their doubleheader with the St. Clair Saints.
After Zach Rivers (Oshawa, ON) opened the scoring in the top of the first off of an RBI single hit by Jacob Mahoney (Toronto, ON), the tides turned as St. Clair took a 3-1 lead in their first time through the batting order.
While the second inning went scoreless, Cole Cote (Welland, ON) scored while Mahoney reached on a fielder's choice to cut Durham's deficit to one.
In every inning afterward, the Saints matched Durham's offensive production.
Fast forward to the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lords had an opportunity to force extra innings with the game tied 6-6.
With a runner on third, a wild pitch sent the Saints runner home for a walk-off 7-5 win.
Eddie Borutskie (Newtonville, ON) had a pair of runs in the game while going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Nick King (Whitby, ON) was on the mound for 4.0 innings, striking out two batters and walking four. Thomas Bond (Ajax, ON) took over for 2.0 innings, striking out three of 13 batters faced. Ben Spunde (Elmira, ON) was on the mound for the final four batters faced, striking out one.
The Lords bounced back in a big way for the second game, scoring a trio of runs in the opening frame before St. Clair had their chance at the plate.
Durham tacked on two more runs as Rivers and Mattes crossed home in the second to put the Lords up by five.
After St. Clair made their way onto the scoreboard, the Lords had a massive third inning with eight runs in the top half.
Mattes hit an RBI double sending Charles Roy (Toronto, ON) home, followed by Rivers scoring on a wild pitch to kickoff the scoring party.
The Saints responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning, followed up by five more in the fifth.
Mahoney, Borutskie and Nolan Hartley (Oshawa, ON) each added more runs in the seventh for good measure and lifted Durham to a 17-10 win.
Seven Lords had two or more runs in the game, led by Mahoney with three. Roy went 4-for-5 at the plate.
Durham went through four pitchers, with Jackson Taylor (Oshawa, ON), Jackson Painter (Whitby, ON), Cruz Lopez (Brooklin, ON) and Tristan Deslauriers (Oshawa, ON) each seeing time on the mound.
The Lords hit the road again on Sunday as they travel to Sarnia to face the Lambton Lions at 1:00 and 3:00 PM.
