FROM THE THRONE: Ryan Mattes

Dive into "From The Throne" to explore the personal reflections of players and coaches that highlight their personal journeys, pivotal moments and behind-the-scenes stories that shape their careers. These features paint a personal portrait of the people behind their accomplishments.

As I reflect on my time with Durham College Athletics, I'm filled with gratitude and a sense of accomplishment.

To be honest, I can hardly believe that I've been here for five years now.

When I first joined the Lords, I was just a local kid from Whitby, filled with dreams and aspirations.

Today, I stand as a veteran, a leader, and a representative of a community that has been a constant source of support and encouragement.

A HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE
Playing so close to home, just ten minutes from where I grew up, added a layer of motivation to my journey.

The proximity to family and friends meant that every game was more than just a competition; it was an opportunity to make my community proud.

My parents, in particular, have been my biggest supporters, attending every game and cheering me on through thick and thin.

Having my dad as an assistant coach for the past four years has been an incredible experience, being able to share this experience with him has been amazing.

And my friends and their unwavering support has always filled me with the extra confidence to perform my best.

BALANCING ACT
Being a student-athlete is no easy feat.

The demands of academics and varsity baseball required discipline, time management, and a relentless work ethic.

I take pride in my academic achievements, including being a multi-time Bert Dejeet Memorial Top GPA Award winner.

Balancing academics with athletics taught me valuable skills that have shaped who I am today.

Being a student-athlete comes with a lot of stress, but it has also helped me develop discipline and time management skills and I'm very proud of how far I've come.

A MENTAL GAME
Baseball is a sport that challenges you mentally as much as it does physically.

Learning to handle failure, reset, and stay composed is an integral part of the game.

I've had my fair share of ups and downs, but each setback has been an opportunity for growth and improvement.

Understanding my strengths and weaknesses, and learning from failures, have been crucial components of my development as a player.

MEMORIES IN THE MAKING
Throughout my time with the Lords, I've been fortunate to be part of some unforgettable moments.

One of the most memorable games was the epic 19-18 victory over George Brown, which remains one of the wildest games in OCAA history.

That day was filled with challenges, including a broken down bus and a late-night return home.

But the camaraderie and determination we showed as a team made it all worthwhile.

Beyond the individual achievements and victories, what I cherish the most about my time at Durham College are the relationships I've built.

This tight-knit community has been my second family, supporting and guiding me every step of the way.

The friendships I've formed with teammates, coaches, and everyone involved in the program are bonds that will last a lifetime.

LOOKING AHEAD
As I look to the future, I'm excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.

After graduation, I'll be transitioning into the working world, applying the skills and knowledge I've gained during my time at Durham College.

But my love for baseball remains strong, and I'll continue to play competitively in Senior AAA baseball.

I've also discovered a passion for coaching and giving back to the community.

As a coach with Academy Baseball in Oshawa, I have the chance to inspire and develop young players, just as I was once inspired by those who came before me.

GRATEFUL FOR IT ALL
In conclusion, being a part of the Durham College baseball program has been a transformative journey.

It's given me the opportunity to pursue my education, play the sport I love, and grow as a person.

I'm grateful for the support of my family, friends, and the entire Durham College community.

The experiences, challenges, and triumphs will always hold a special place in my heart.

As I move forward, I carry the lessons I've learned and the memories I've made with me.

Thank you, Durham College, for shaping me into the athlete, student, and person I am today.
