Durham College Mourns the Passing of Former Baseball Coach Tim Harkness Sr.

OSHAWA, Ont. - Durham College is deeply saddened to share the passing of former men's baseball coach Tim Harkness Sr., who passed away recently in Courtice at the age of 87.

The Harkness family holds a special place in the fabric of Durham College Athletics. His son, Tim Harkness Jr., has also coached with the Lords for seven seasons, carrying forward his father's dedication to student-athletes.

Two of his grandsons proudly wore the green and gold as well. Brodie Harkness, a pitcher who competed for three seasons beginning in 2015, and Dylan Harkness, a first baseman who played two seasons beginning in 2014.

A respected figure in both professional baseball and the Durham Lords community, Harkness leaves behind a legacy defined by humility, dedication, and a lifelong love of the game.

Born in Lachine, Québec, Harkness enjoyed a notable playing career in Major League Baseball during the 1960s, appearing in 259 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets. Following his playing days, he continued to shape the sport as a scout with the San Diego Padres, known for his sharp eye for talent and commitment to developing young athletes.

Harkness later brought that passion and expertise to Durham College, where he served as a valued member of the men's baseball coaching staff. His influence helped establish the Lords as a premiere destination for collegiate baseball players in Ontario, laying groundwork that continues to benefit the program today.

Tim Harkness Sr.'s impact extended far beyond the diamond. He will be remembered for the warmth he showed to everyone he encountered and for the lasting imprint he made on generations of students, athletes, and colleagues.

Durham College extends its heartfelt condolences to the Harkness family during this difficult time. His legacy will always be part of the Lords community.
