CARP, Ont. - The Durham College women's softball team advance to the gold medal game at the 2024 CCSA National Championship on Sunday where they will take on the Humber Hawks at 12:30 PM.
Durham began their day at 10:00 AM, wrapping up the group stage with a matchup against the University of Toronto.
After the first two batters were out in the bottom of the first, the Lords found their sweet spot and quickly put two runners on base in time for Jayden Bennett to hit a triple that sent Peyton Jones and Jessica Benz home to open the scoring.
In the second inning, another triple - this time hit by Grace Hearns, sent Natalie Clemens rounding the bases from first to make it 3-0. Hearns would score her second run of the game in the inning, followed by a run scored by Jessica Greene to make it 5-0 after two.
After scoring three more in the third, the Lords were held to their only scoreless inning in the fourth. Their bats came back alive in the bottom of the fifth as the Lords scored four times to finish off the game in five innings with a 13-6 win.
Morgan Salter had the win in the game, pitching 3.0 innings and throwing five strikeouts. Makayla Benz came in for the final 2.0 innings, pitching a pair of strikeouts. Hearns went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs and a pair of RBI's.
Finishing first in Pool A entitled the Lords to advance straight to the semifinals, where they met up with Western University long after sunset.
After Peyton Jones walked the first batter of the game, the next hitter in the order bunted into a double play and Jones threw her first of five strikeouts in the game soon after to end the half inning.
In the bottom half of the first, Hearns, Greene, Bennett and Jessica Benz all scored to establish an early 4-0 lead.
Fast forward to the third inning, a triple on a fly ball to right field hit by J. Benz sent Jones home to score, the first of seven runs in the inning. Durham would ultimately cruise to an 11-0 win.
Durham advances to the gold medal game for the second consecutive year. They will meet fellow OCAA side - the Humber Hawks, in the gold medal game at 12:30 PM.
The Lords have taken home three silver and two bronze medals from the CCSA National Championship dating back to 2010 and will look to win their first gold in program history.
