OTTAWA, Ont. - In the qualifying stage of the OCAA women's soccer championship, the Durham Lords battled to a 3-2 win over the Algonquin Wolves on Wednesday evening.
Finishing the regular season as the sixth seed in the east, the Lords were matched up against the third place Wolves with the match taking place in the nation's capital.
Following a scoreless first half, Algonquin opened the scoring in the 49th minute. Less than 10 minutes later, Sage Thomas-Roberts scored their first goal of the postseason to bring the score line level again.
The hosts took the lead again in the 73rd minute with a cross into the box, finding a player in white alone in front of the net.Â
On a corner kick, the centre back Chloe Hercia got her head on it and put the ball in the back of the net for an 83rd minute goal to tie it up again.
Deep into stoppage time, a through ball from the midfield split between the defenders to Alexis Bayley who controlled the ball at the top of the box and shot it right over the goalkeepers goal deep for a 90th minute winner.
Holding on for a 3-2 win, the Lords will host the Sheridan Bruins in the quarter-finals at Vaso's Field on Saturday, October 19 at 6:30 PM. The Bruins are the seventh seeded team in the west, finishing the season 4-5-1 before pulling off an upset over the St. Clair Saints in the qualifying around on Wednesday.
