OSHAWA, Ont. - Durham College women's soccer has signed Emme Gjezo, a dynamic forward from Courtice. Gjezo brings an impressive mix of scoring ability, playmaking vision and leadership to the program.
"I decided to go with Durham College right after seeing the sort of team I would be joining and really being able to envision myself fitting right in with the environment of the team," she said. "Coach Bruce was very helpful and supportive during my whole process and I'm very happy I'll have him as my coach next season."
Standing 5-foot-7, Gjezo is comfortable leading the line or creating on the flanks. She has played with Whitby FC on IModel Tier 1 for two years and currently competes in League1 with the. Whitby U20s.
Her high school résumé is equally strong as she's been a four-year varsity player at Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School, serving as captain for two seasons and earning multiple MVP honours.
Gjezo's accolades include a Player of the Game nod at the Tiamo Festival Cup, her school's Girls Soccer MVP for 2023-24, Tiger Bowl MVP for 2024-25, two Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) championships, an Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) appearance, and a spot on the FTF Players to Watch List from the Spring ID Clinic.
"Emme's the type of player you notice right away because of the energy and confidence she brings on the pitch. She competes hard, she creates chances and she's shown a lot of resilience already at a young age coming back from injury the way she did", said Head Coach Bruce Cullen. "What stood out most to us though was her character. She's a leader, she cares about her teammates and you can tell how much the game means to her. We're excited to have her joining our program."
A memorable moment in her career thus far came after a setback.
"Being able to come back to soccer after my knee injury with little hope and having my most successful season with winning all my tournaments, gaining MVP awards and having top five most assists in the league led me to realize how much I love the sport," said Piezo.
Gjezo's approach to the game reflects her character as much as her talent.
"I've spent my whole life revolved around soccer and I've never taken it for granted once," she said. "Being on teams where I've been a leader gives me the opportunity to show my personality and how I strive to always help everyone and look out for others. I feel that gives me a competitive and thoughtful edge to being the player that I am today," said Gjezo.
Emme will enter Durham's Sports Management program in the fall, eager to grow both as an athlete and a student.
