KING CITY, ON - The 2023-24 OCAA women's volleyball season came to an end on Saturday as Durham College placed fourth on the season.
Durham matched up against the Loyalist Lancers on Saturday afternoon for their third and final meeting of the season.Â
After a slow start the night before, the Lords started strong with a 5-2 lead early. Making the score 24-20 and forcing the Lancers to call a timeout late in the set, a kill smashed by Chanel Ethier (Ottawa, ON) gave the Lords a 25-20 win to end the frame.
Both sides traded off points back-and-forth until it was tied at three before five consecutive points from the Lancers gave them a large 8-3 lead. Durham came as close as within two as they trailed 16-14, however the Lancers held onto their lead to take the second set 25-18.
The third set looked as if it could go either way as it was tied at 18 late in the action, but Loyalist won the race to 25 as they took a 2-1 lead on the afternoon with a 25-22 win.
Four sets is all that was needed. Durham was regularly trailing by only a small handful of points in the set but couldn't put together the hot push required to overtake the Lancers, falling 25-19 to lose in four.
Three players had double-digit points for the Lords, led by Amanda Larsen (Toronto, ON) who had 13.0 points, recording eight blocks and five kills on the day.
Ethier and Chelsea Oke (Brooklin, ON) tied with 11.0 points as Ethier posted 11 kills and six digs while Oke had 10 kills, a solo block and 16 digs.Â
Aislinn Pedersen (Hamilton, ON) was also a standout performer with eight kills, one service ace and 14 digs. Brooke Young (Chestermere, AB) finished the season finale with 33 assists.
Larsen was named to the championship all-star team for the 2024 OCAA Women's Volleyball Championship. Ethier earned player of the match honours.
