OSHAWA, Ont. - Mariah Laroco of the curling team and Mark Stoop of the men's basketball team have been named the Durham College student-athletes of the week for the period ending February 9, 2025.
Laroco, a Computer Programming student, competed with the mixed doubles squad at the 2025 OCAA Curling Championships in Dundas last week, which included a big 11-2 win over the Niagara Knights. Mariah's commitment to strength and conditioning throughout the year allowed her to perform at peak energy for seven games over four consecutive days. Her spectacular final rock in the last end of round robin play was a hero shot that served as an unforgettable moment for the team. Her vibrant personality, sense of camaraderie, and friendly competitive nature made the Lords a constant fan and opponent favourite.
Stoop, a Firefighter - Pre-Service Education and Training student, posted a pair of double-doubles on the road last week in Barrie against the Georgian Grizzlies and in Toronto against the George Brown Huskies. Facing the Grizzlies, Stoop finished the night with 17 points and 13 rebounds, including four assists, a block and a steal. Only a few days later, he recorded 19 points and 16 rebounds against the Huskies, along with four assists, four blocks and four steals.
With the conclusion of the OCAA championships, the curling team's competitive season has come to an end.
The men's basketball team will host the Fanshawe Falcons on Saturday, February 15 at 5:00 PM in the Campus Recreation & Wellness Centre for the OCAA championship qualifiers.
The Durham College athletes of the week is presented by Subway, located at 2069 Simcoe Street North in Oshawa.
