OSHAWA, Ont. - The Department of Athletics & Recreation at Durham College has announced that Patrick Kabeya will become the 9
th head coach in men's basketball history.
Â
"We are thrilled to welcome Patrick Kabeya as the new head coach of our men's basketball program," said
Scott Dennis, Director of Athletics & Recreation. "Patrick brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the court. We are confident that under his leadership, our program will continue to excel and uphold the proud traditions of Durham College athletics."
Â
Kabeya has experienced college basketball in Ontario from the lens of a student-athlete, an assistant coach and a head coach.
Â
He played for three seasons at Loyalist College in Belleville, averaging 10.3 points per game with 32.2 minutes on the floor in his freshman season in 2011-12. The following year, he was the Lancers' leading scorer with 19.2 points per game and was named the male athlete of the year at Loyalist and an east division first team all-star.
Â
2013-14 was his final season as a player, leading the team with an average of 20.8 points per game and earning second consecutive male athlete of the year and east division first team all-star titles.
Â
Upon graduating, Patrick moved back home to Toronto and coached high school basketball at Central Toronto Academy, leading his team to an Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) bronze medal.
Â
Kabeya returned to Belleville in the spring of 2016 to accept a men's basketball head coaching offer at Loyalist College. During his tenure, he earned OCAA east division coach of the year honours during the 2019-20 season.
Â
He took over a Loyalist team coming off a 7-13 season and after his four seasons, built a 15-5 team with 43 wins across the four years.
Â
Following the pandemic, Kabeya returned to coaching when he took an assistant job at Durham with the men's basketball team in 2022-23. In the three years on the job, the Lords have amassed a 48-10 record in regular season play and have earned OCAA gold, OCAA bronze, and CCAA silver medals.
Â
"I'm incredibly honoured to take on the role of head coach," said Kabeya. "I want to thank Coach Rowley for his mentorship over the years and I'm excited to continue building on the foundation we have built together. Our focus remains on developing our student-athletes both on and off the court, and I can't wait to continue to work with this group."
Â
Kabeya and his staff are already deep on the recruiting trail as they look to build on the success of this season and have their team ready for the fall.
