Lords sign Montreal's John Dayo

OSHAWA, Ont. - Montréal native John Dayo is set to play for the Durham Lords men's basketball program for the 2025-26 season.

The 6-foot-0 guard began his collegiate career at Dawson College in his hometown during the 2022-23 season, where he made significant contributions to the D1 men's team.

His efforts were instrumental in the team's journey to the 2023 CCAA Men's Basketball Championship final in Calgary, where they secured a silver medal at the national championship.

Following his successful stint at Dawson College, Dayo's talent and potential earned him an opportunity to play for Brandon University in Manitoba, where he spent two seasons.

During his time there, Dayo's skills and dedication were recognized when he was honoured with the Donovan Gayle award, which recognizes athletes who excel academically, demonstrate leadership skills, and contribute to the team's success.

"We're excited to welcome John to the program," said head coach Patrick Kabeya. He brings a high level of experience from both the CCAA and U Sports, and we believe his maturity and leadership will have an immediate impact on our group."

Amidst his academic and athletic commitments, Dayo actively participated in various Filipino leagues during the summers, competing in tournaments across Canada.

For Dayo, the CCAA National Championship stands out as his most cherished moment in his playing career. Despite the team's loss to the host SAIT Trojans, the experience of competing at a national level with an exceptional group of teammates left an indelible mark on him.

When the time came for Dayo to choose his next destination, he explored several options. However, it was the genuine connections he established with the coaches at Durham College that ultimately influenced his decision.

Dayo discovered a culture at Durham College that embraces both athletic and personal growth, with coaches who are genuinely invested in their athletes' development both on and off the court.

"The consistent communication, support and belief they had in me made it clear that Durham was the right fit," said Dayo. "It is somewhere that I can grow, contribute, and be part of a culture that values both hard work and character."

John will be studying in the Fitness and Health Promotion program in September.
