Devonne Henry wins gold with Ontario at Canada Games

OSHAWA, Ont. - Recently announced Durham College men's rugby recruit Devonne Henry won a gold medal on Wednesday night with Team Ontario in Men's Rugby Sevens at the 2025 Canada Summer Games.

The Men's Rugby Sevens competition took place at Swilers Rugby Club in St. John's, Newfoundland & Labrador.

Henry scored eight tries at the tournament, with two each against New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Québec.

"My experience in Newfoundland has been great. I had the chance to experience Olympic-style games and play the top competition in the country," said Henry. "Everyone here has been supportive and I'm always grateful to get a chance to experience things like this. I can't wait to represent the Lords."

Ontario opened the Games with a trio of dominating wins on Monday, defeating New Brunswick 40-5 before blanking Manitoba 43-0 and Saskatchewan 36-0. They ended the Preliminary Round on Tuesday with a 41-0 win over Alberta, easily placing at the top of Pool A.

Later in the day, Ontario rolled past Nova Scotia in the quarter-final by a 33-5 score to secure a spot in the semifinal where they beat Québec 24-12. In what was their closest result of the week, Ontario defeated B.C. 17-12 to take home the gold medal.

Men's Rugby Sevens returned to the Canada Games this year for the first time since 2009. It was first introduced in the 1980's, and after being removed for the 1989 Games, returned from 1993-2009. Women's Rugby Sevens returned in 2022 in Niagara.

"Seeing Devonne succeed on the national stage is something we're all proud of," said Durham head coach John Watkins. "Experiences like this only make him a stronger player and leader when he's back with us at DC."
