Lords make it a dozen with a win over Canadore
OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham College men's volleyball team extended their current winning streak to 12 games after defeating Canadore College in three straight sets Saturday afternoon at the CRWC. Set scores were 25-21, 25-20 and 25-23.
The Lords won through a complete team effort as the final team statistics featured six players with four or more kills; four players with four or more digs; four players with two or more blocked shots; and three players with service aces.
Durham's ability to finish opponents at the end of sets was put on display at the conclusion of the second set. Up 21-19, Lords head coach
George Matsusaki took a timeout to corral his players and ensure they maintained a steady mindset to finish. The timeout worked as the end of the second set saw big plays from several players including a monstrous block from
Petrus Kuypers (Haydon, Ont.) to win the set. Kuypers would finish the game tied with
Jeremy Hoekstra (Cobourg, Ont.) with nine kills each to lead the Lords in that category.
Setter
Riley McAllister (Whitby, Ont.) had another all-star performance finishing with 29 assists, four kills and two block shots, while
Paul Rapos (Oshawa, Ont.) displayed a strong all-around game with eight kills, seven digs and three blocked shots.
With the victory Durham maintains its position tied atop the East region standings with Algonquin with matching 13-1 records while Canadore falls to a record of 5-9.
This marks the fifth consecutive year Durham has at least 20 wins overall.
The Lords will look to continue their streak on Thursday, January 30 at the CRWC as they welcome Georgian College with first serve set for 8 p.m. Thursday's contest will be the Lords last home game of the season and the team will play honour to its graduating seniors prior to the match.
