ETOBICOKE, Ont. – The Durham College men's and women's volleyball teams each had a great opening weekend as they reached the finals of the Humber Cup in Etobicoke, Ont. Unfortunately for Durham, the hosting Humber Hawks would come up with wins in both championship finals, as the Lords had to settle for the runner-up position.
On the women's side, after dropping their first match of the tournament to the Hawks, Durham marched on through to the finals with three straight 3-1 wins. The Lords would upend Algonquin on Friday night, followed up with wins over Redeemer and Canadore in elimination games on Saturday.
The Lords fought hard in the finals, but were unable to upset the seven-time OCAA champions.
Jessica Broad (Courtice, Ont.) and
Kayla Donahue (Ajax, Ont.) were named to the all-tournament team following the championship match.
The men's team had a similar path to the finals, dropping their opening match 3-1 to Humber. The Lords would rebound and knock off three straight wins, as they defeated Ottawa (3-0), George Brown (3-1) and Redeemer (3-1) to advance to the finals. In the championship match, the teams needed a fifth set to break a 2-2 tie, which Humber would eventually come out on top with a thrilling 15-13 win.
For their efforts throughout the tournament, Durham's
Matthew Gibson (Oshawa, Ont.) and
Luke Fafard (Dauphin, Ont.) were named to the all-tournament team.
The Lords will host the Durham College Men's Volleyball Thanksgiving Adidas Cup next weekend.
