WELLAND, Ont. – The No. 6 ranked Durham College men's volleyball team looked strong to start up 2015 but could not overcome one poor early morning performance as they finished in third place at the Niagara Knights Invitational.
After picking up wins over St. Clair (3-1) and George Brown (3-1) on Friday, the Lords were in the driver's seat heading into action on Saturday. Unfortunately for Durham, they had one of their worst performances of the season as the Falcons won three straight sets.
Later in the day against the George Grizzlies in the bronze medal match, Durham went back to their winning ways as they managed to pull off a 3-0 sweep to finish in third place overall.
Following the match, Durham captain
Jeremy Hoekstra was named to the tournament all-star team.
Last year at the tournament, the Lords went 2-2 and won the consolation bracket.
OCAA conference play will resume on Thursday, Jan. 8 when the Lords host the Trent Excalibur. Durham will enter 2015 undefeated in conference play, looking to build on its' 9-0 record.
The Lords have dropped just five sets in its nine regular season matches, with four of those losses coming in a pair of matches. Both the Grizzlies and Fleming Knights extended the Lords to five sets, but Durham came away from the meetings unblemished.
