OCAA Men's VolleyballDurham College defeats Trent 3-2 OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College men's volleyball team continues to be the lone undefeated team in the OCAA, but Thursday night served as a bit of a wakeup call for the No. 7 ranked squad.
They defeated the Trent Excalibur 3-2, a team they handed a straight set loss to in October, showing there is a little work to do as they make their push towards the playoffs.
Durham opened the match with a great performance, a 25-14 set win, but the second set was a different story.
Trailing Trent early, the Lords captain
Jeremy Hoekstra (Cobourg, Ont.) helped his team get on a roll to take a 14-13 lead. They couldn't open up a large lead and the Excalibur tied the set 22-22. Trent tied the match 1-1 with their 25-23 set win.
As if the court was tilted in the third set, Durham crushed Trent 25-11, giving them a chance to close out the match in the fourth. The Excalibur had different plans as they led 13-12 midway through the set.
After tying the set 23-23, Durham College eventually lost it 26-24 to force a fifth and final set.
When the teams switched sides in the fifth it was the Lords ahead 8-6. They didn't look back as they held on to win 15-11.
Erik Janssen (Hampton, Ont.) led the Lords with 20 kills, while
Petrus Kuypers (Haydon, Ont.) and
Nick Coleman (Brooklin, Ont.) each added seven.
Luke Kilbourn (Ingersoll, Ont.) and Kuypers each had three blocks, with
Matthew Gibson (Oshawa, Ont.) leading the team in assists with 39.
Christian Zimmer had six kills to lead Trent's offence, while Andrew Kretz had four blocks.
Durham College is back in action on Saturday night at home against La Cité at 8 p.m.
