Lords lose home opener in back-and-forth game with Seneca

OSHAWA, Ont. – A late offensive push by the Seneca Sting was too much for the Durham College women's basketball team on Tuesday night as the Lords lost their first game of the regular season 83-76.

In the early minutes of the game the Lords went on a 11-2 run, momentum they hoped to sustain throughout the rest of the first quarter, but the Sting rebounded from their slow start to close the gap to 25-18 after one quarter.

High-energy offence continued from both teams as shots were falling from all over the place. Going into halftime with a 44-39 lead, the Lords top scorer was Kayla Marshall (Ottawa, Ont.) with 16 points.

The Lords continued their dominant offence in the second half by going on a 13-5 run, which pushed their lead to 13.  Seneca seemed to be strongly affected by the halftime break, but slowly climbed back into the game by ending the quarter on an 11-1 run highlighted by Sarah Givens' three-point play. Entering the final quarter the Lords and Sting were tied at 60.

The fourth started slowly for the Lords, as the Sting continued their pressure from the end of the third quarter. The Lords managed to bounce back and bring the game within one point after Lindsay Panchan (Ajax, Ont.) made one of her five foul shots in the game. The last two minutes of the game involved a lot of fouls and free throws from both teams, but the Lords were not able to capitalize on their chances as they fell to the Sting 83-76.

Marshall led the Lords with a game-high 22 points and Panchan helped with her third double-double in as many games with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Alcian Satchel's team-high 20 points and Rochelle Hassan's team high six rebounds led Seneca in their winning effort.
