Box Score OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College men's volleyball team picked up an important 3-2 victory on Thursday night against the Georgian Grizzlies to wrap up the first half of 2015-16 OCAA conference play.
By winning, the Lords are now in a four-way tie for first place in the east division at 8-2. The logjam includes the Grizzlies, Seneca Sting and Trent Excalibur.
Durham opened the night against the Georgian by winning the first two sets, 25-17 and 25-23, but the Grizzlies bounced back with 25-21 and 25-22 set scores to force the fifth and deciding set.
The teams traded points back-and-forth, with the Lords holding the advantage 8-7 when the teams switched sides.
Durham won the next point, to push their lead to two, but Georgian cut the lead to one again on the following play.
From there
Matt McGirr (Brampton, Ont.) took control as he helped serve out the match, including a pair of service aces on the final points to win the set 15-8 and the match 3-2.
McGirr had seven service aces in the match and 14 kills, but
Erik Janssen (Hampton, Ont.) led his team with 18 kills and four blocks.
Andrew Watson (Uxbridge, Ont.) added 13 kills and three blocks in the Lords victory.
It was Jason Grimm with 13 kills, alongside Darien Haynes with seven kills and seven blocks, that helped Georgian mount their comeback.
Durham is now off until Dec. 29-30 when they travel to Welland, Ont. for the Niagara Knights Invitational.
The Lords first conference game of 2016 will be Jan. 7 at home when they host the Centennial Colts.
