OCAA Men's VolleyballDurham defeats Fleming 3-0 OSHAWA, Ont. – For the first time since 2005-06 the Durham College men's volleyball team has had a perfect regular season.
Capping off their 18-0 OCAA conference play on Thursday night at home, the No. 4 ranked Lords did it in a big way with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-11) victory over the second place Fleming Knights.
Having clinched first place and a trip to the OCAA men's volleyball championship on Jan. 28 with a 3-1 win over the Georgian Grizzlies, Durham has known their postseason fate for a few weeks, yet continued to work to improve as a unit.
The team knows the season isn't over yet and as captain
Jeremy Hoekstra (Cobourg, Ont.) said after the match, the real challenge and goal is having a successful championship at St. Clair College (Feb. 27 to March 1).
In his fifth and final year with the team, Hoekstra had seven kills and a service ace on Thursday as part of Seniors Night, a night that recognized the graduating seniors during their final home game.
Durham College's most recent male athlete of the week,
Erik Janssen (Hampton, Ont.), continued his dominance with 14 kills to lead the Lords. He also added one service ace.
Nick Coleman (Brooklin, Ont.) picked up six kills and four blocks, while
Matthew Gibson (Oshawa, Ont.) had four blocks, three kills and 27 assists for Durham.
It was Nick Bride that led the way for Fleming with five kills and one block, while his teammate Clay Couchman had two kills and four blocks.
Durham College is will now have the next two weeks off as they prepare for opening day of the championship on Feb. 27 in Windsor. Visit durhamlords.com prior to the championship for more information on competing teams and the Lords schedule.
