OSHAWA, Ont. – The regular season record means little to nothing to the Durham College men's volleyball team heading into the OCAA men's volleyball championship.
The No. 5 ranked Lords finished atop the east division with a perfect 18-0 record, but as far as team captain
Jeremy Hoekstra (Cobourg, Ont.) is concerned, it doesn't mean much come game time on Friday.
"To us, our focus is no longer on 18-0, that's in the past," said Hoekstra. "Our record as far as we're concerned is 0-0, no wins and no losses. We're purely looking at it as what we have to do from this point on."
The Lords open the championship in Windsor at 8 p.m. against the host St. Clair Saints.
Although the two teams didn't meet in conference play, they split their two matches at tournaments this season. At the Adidas Cup in October the Lords lost 2-0 to the Saints, but in January in Niagara they defeated St. Clair 3-1.
Durham expects it to be loud during their opening match, with most fans supporting the hometown Saints, but head coach
George Matsusaki said his team will use that energy to their advantage.
"Although the majority of the fans are going to cheering against us, the guys are excited to be playing in front of a packed house and in the primetime game," he said. "As athletes, you train all year to play on the big stage and it does not get much bigger than this."
