OCAA Men's Volleyball Championship
Quarter-Final: St. Clair defeated Durham 3-1
WINDSOR, Ont. – Home court advantage can mean a lot in the postseason and that was the case on Friday night as the St. Clair Saints upset the Durham Lords 3-1 in the opening round of the OCAA Championship.
The result puts an end to Durham's perfect season as they entered the championship with an 18-0 record. The Lords will look to go 3-0 through the remainder of the championship in order to win a bronze medal.
Durham's next match is set to take place on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. against the Sheridan Bruins, who dropped their quarter-final match 3-0 to the Humber Hawks.
St. Clair fed off the crowd's energy in the opening set, winning by a score of 25-23.
In set number two, Durham played more like the OCAA east region champions that fans became accustomed to throughout the regular season as they earned a 25-19 win.
With the third set all knotted up at 12 points apiece, it looked as if the two teams would be in for a long battle. However, that was not the case as St. Clair went on a run that Durham could not stop as they took a 2-1 lead with a 25-21 victory.
In the fourth set, St. Clair continued to roll as they won 25-19 to advance to the OCAA semifinals.
Matt Gibson ended the night with 21 assists, seven kills, three aces and three digs while
Nick Coleman would record 10 points with six points and four blocks in the losing effort.
Defensively for Durham,
Luke Fafard had 18 digs.
St. Clair's Jean-Marc Lappan had 43 assists for St. Clair in the win. His favourite target was OCAA player of the year Jason Hernandez who recorded a game high 19 kills.
The final four will be an all-west affair as St. Clair will match-up against Humber while Niagara will take on Fanshawe.
