OSHAWA, Ont. – The No. 14 ranked Durham College men's soccer team could not crack the combination of Cambrian's defence on Sunday afternoon as they were shutout 1-0 at Vaso's Field.
The Lords had plenty of possession in the offensive zone but could not break through the Cambrian defensive lockdown as the Golden Shield consistently had eight men in the box.
Cambrian would capitalize on a miscue by Durham goalkeeper
Mark Kamstra (Newcastle, Ont.), as he fouled a striker inside the box. Marco Armiento took the penalty kick and buried it in the bottom left hand corner to give the Golden Shield the lead in the 63
rd minute.
One of the Lords best chances came in injury time when they were awarded a corner kick.
Bruce Cullen (Pickering, Ont.) drove the ball into the box in which
Cody Kraemer (Whitby, Ont.) got his head on. The ball would sail just over the crossbar as time expired on the Lords.
Durham had 16 shot attempts compared to just six by Cambrian. Golden Shield goalkeeper Evan Phillips made nine saves in the shutout victory.
In their comeback attempt, Durham turned up their physicality and were issued three yellow cards.
Cambrian (3-1-1) moves one point ahead of Durham (3-2-0) for second place in the OCAA east region standings. The Lords next game comes against the Centennial Colts (1-4-0) on Thursday night at Vaso's Field. Kickoff is at 8:15 p.m.
