Lords finish fifth at 2017 Adidas Cup

OSHAWA, Ont. – The George Brown Huskies won the 2017 Adidas Cup in a thrilling three-set game over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday afternoon. The host Durham Lords finished fifth in the eight team, two-day tournament.

Durham began the second day of the 2017 Adidas Cup with an early 9 a.m. start against the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees in a quarter-final meeting. Both sides traded leads in the first set, but Ottawa ultimately squeaked out the victory 25-23. The Lords had an opportunity to send the game to a third set with a win, but the Gee-Gees pulled off another close 25-23 victory to win it in straight sets.

In their second game of the day, Durham played a consolation game against the Loyalist Lancers – their second meeting of the tournament. In round-robin play, both teams matched up evenly resulting in a 1-1 tie. The consolation round plays a best two-of-three series and this time around fortunes were in the Lords' favour as they defeated Loyalist in straight sets.

The Lords ended the tournament with a fifth-place game against the Conestoga Condors. After defeating the Condors 2-0 (26-24, 25-21) the Lords finish the tournament in fifth place out of eight teams with two wins, two ties and two losses.

The Adidas Cup would see a new champion in 2017 as the defending champion Algonquin Thunder lost their semifinal game. The Thunder finished their tournament fighting for third place against the Fleming Knights in a rematch of the 2016 final. Algonquin earned a victory in three sets over Fleming

George Brown made their first championship appearance since falling to the Humber Hawks in the 2013 final. The Huskies had an opportunity to come out on top against a strong University of Ottawa team and they took advantage of it, winning a total of two games to one (30-28, 21-25, 22-20). D'Artaniel Jackman from the Huskies earned tournament MVP honours in the win.
