OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College women's basketball team was an inch away from erasing a 16-point deficit but the St. Clair Saints managed to hang on for a 66-63 victory Saturday night at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre in the OCAA qualifying game.
With 2.2 seconds to go and Durham trailing by three,
Victoria Brody (Scarborough, Ont.) inbounded the ball to Kaitlin Cruickshank (Whitby, Ont.). Cruickshank would pass it back to Brody who launched a three from the corner, but the ball banked off the rim as the buzzer sounded.
Brody had the hot-hand in the Lords' comeback attempt as she had a game-high 19 points along with teammate
Lindsay Panchan (Ajax, Ont.) Brody was 8-for-14 from the floor in 25 minutes of court time.
Panchan was four steals shy of a triple-double as she had 14 rebounds and six steals to go along with her 19 points.
The Lords trailed 36-23 at the half but it was a
Kayla Marshall (Ottawa, Ont.) three-pointer from long distance at the buzzer that spurred the Lords second half comeback. The fifth-year senior ended up with 14 points in the loss.
2016 CCAA All-Canadian Shannon Kennedy led St. Clair in scoring with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Nicole Tamm had 13 points, six rebounds and four assists.
St. Clair dominated the glass outrebounding Durham 62-40.
This marks the third straight year and seventh time since 2007 Durham has lost to St. Clair in the OCAA qualifying game.
Durham's season has now finished for 2016-17, meaning the focus will now turn to recruitment and preparing for the 2017-18 campaign.
