Lords volleyball programs hosting breast cancer awareness weekend

OSHAWA, Ont. – This weekend for their first home games of the season, the Durham College volleyball teams will be raising funds and awareness for breast cancer.

Starting with Saturday's matches against the Algonquin Thunder, both Lords volleyball squads will wear pink for their warmups, as well as start to collect donations for a member of the Durham Lords community currently going through breast cancer treatment.

Popcorn sales over the weekend will also go directly towards the fundraising.

"This is something that is near to many of us in our program," said Durham College women's volleyball head coach Tony Clarke. "Most of our players have a friend or family member that has had breast cancer and for that reason we believed that it was something we could do more about. We have a member of the Durham Lords community going through this right now and this is a great opportunity to support them, raise awareness about breast cancer and assist in hopefully finding a cure."

The home opener on Saturday, which was also originally slated to be Durham Rebels Volleyball appreciation day, has been something the Rebels have jumped on board with as well. Rebels players, coaches and parents in attendance will be supporting the cause by wearing pink ribbons, as well as bringing donations.

First serve on Saturday is 6 p.m. at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.

Sunday afternoon against the La Cité Coyotes both teams will continue their "pink" weekend at 1 p.m.
