TORONTO, Ont. – The Durham Lords men's soccer team will not go back-to-back as OCAA champions after falling 3-0 in the OCAA championship quarter-final to the Sheridan Bruins on Thursday night.
Sheridan took the lead in the 23rd minute after a goalmouth scramble saw Anthony Wright poke home from close range.
Nate Paine (Whitby, Ont.) had an effort in the 26th minute that was heading for the bottom right corner, but the Bruins' goalkeeper made a good save.
Sheridan had two chances within a couple of minutes that came close as Cyrus Rollocks' shot went just over and then he hit the post minutes later.
Nigel Buckley (Pickering, Ont.) nearly pulled the Lords level with arguably their best chance of the match in the 43rd minute, but his volley was tipped over the bar as Sheridan led 1-0 at the break.
Durham began applying more pressure in the start of the second half, but the Bruins defence was organized well and stood firm until they made it 2-0 in the 73rd minute when Rollocks got on the end of a rebound and tapped home from close range.
Sheridan were awarded a penalty in the 83rd and Manuel Morgado converted to make it 3-0 and all but end the game.
The Durham Lords couldn't find a way to break through in the remaining minutes, setting them up for the consolation semifinal against the George Brown Huskies. Kick off is set for 12:00 p.m. Esther Shiner Stadium in Toronto.
