HAMILTON, Ont. – The Durham College women's basketball team showed this weekend they aren't the same team from just a year ago.
This year they completely flipped their results from the 2017 preseason with three wins over the Redeemer Royals, Mohawk Mountaineers and St. Clair Saints. Last year in Hamilton against the same three opponents the Lords were handed three losses.
"We had a great effort from our entire team over the past two days," said Durham College head coach Heather Lafontaine. "We were the 'Little Engine that Could' and found a way to earn wins against some great programs."
The opening game on Friday night featured a 109-73 win for the Lords. Five Durham College players were in double-digit scoring, led by rookie
Marie Stasiuk (Cobourg, Ont.) with 20 points, while
Dekota Kirby (Markham, Ont.) had 18 points and 15 assists for a double-double.
On Saturday, they opened with a 78-50 win over the host Mountaineers. Kirby finished with 19 points, followed closely by
Alyssa Navarro (Oshawa, Ont.) and
Chyvon Thomas (Ajax, Ont.) with 16 apiece.
Their final game was against the rival St. Clair Saints, which Durham claimed 94-76. Stasiuk earned a double-double with 26 points and 19 boards.
Maddie Dender (Ajax, Ont.) finished with 22 points.
This Thursday they return to preseason action against the Niagara Knights in Welland, before travelling to Sherbrooke for the Cougar Fall Classic.
