OSHAWA, ON - Marking the return of the Campus Cup following a virtual hiatus a year ago, the Durham Lords and Ontario Tech Ridgebacks soccer programs went to battle at Vaso's Field on Wednesday night. Two hard fought matches saw the Lords fall just short as the women lost 2-0 and the men 1-0 in back-to-back action.
One of the hottest tickets on campus, Vaso's Field filled up to a limited 500 person capacity in short time as the women kicked things off on Wednesday evening. The Lords struggled to maintain possession against a strong OUA opponent in the Ridgebacks. Despite the lack of ball control and a shortened bench in the preseason outing, it was the DC goalkeepers who kept the Lords in the match, turning aside several strong chances for Ontario Tech who tallied double-digit shots on target. The Ridgebacks were able to find the back of the net twice, but the experience gained for the Lords in facing a strong competitor like their campus partners will pay dividends come next week when DC opens their OCAA schedule at home.
For the men, an even match saw a 0-0 stalemate heading into the final 10 minutes of play. Both teams found goal-scoring chances throughout, with Lords newcomer
Evan Jerrett (Trenton, ON) providing a standout performance on the left side of the pitch for DC. The Ridgebacks however secured the Campus Cup victory scoring with just two minutes remaining in the match. Despite missing a few key veterans for the exhibition contest, the Lords will look to carry the momentum from a Monday night victory and strong Wednesday night outing against OUA teams into their own OCAA season opener this Friday at Vaso's Field.
As mentioned the Durham Lords women will next open their season against the Loyalist Lancers at Vaso's Field next Tuesday, Sept. 21, while the men will get right to it on Friday, Sept. 17 when they welcome the Fleming Knights to Vaso's.
