OSHAWA, ON - The Durham Lords men's soccer team opened their pre-season campaign at Vaso's Field on Wednesday with a 5-0 win over the Niagara Knights.
A total of 80 minutes was played with a modified series of two 40-minute halves.
Skylar Grey (Ajax, ON) opened the scoring early with an 11th minute goal, putting the Lords on the board for the first time in exhibition play. He would double Durham's lead in the 28th minute before scoring a spectacular goal less than 10 minutes later to complete the hat trick and give the Lords a 3-0 lead going into halftime.
Durham were back on the board early in the second half, with Garvit Gautam (Oshawa, ON) finding the back of the net in the 44th minute. Less than four minutes later, Gautam added a second to put the Lords up by five.
Continuing solid defensive play through the remainder of the match, Durham earned a shutout in their first competitive match of the new year.
Garrett Werner (Ajax, ON) and Jonathan Ocquaye (Mississauga, ON) split time between the posts evenly.
The Lords will hit the pitch again in a week as the team travels to Peterborough for an exhibition match against Trent University.
