BELLEVILLE, ON – Durham stood strong in the final minute to stave off late comeback in 51-49 win over the Loyalist Lancers.
The first quarter was the highest scoring of the bunch, with the Lords taking a 17-14 lead after the opening 10 minutes. Durham extended their lead in the second frame to head into the locker room with a 31-24 lead.
Durham went on a 6-0 run to open the third quarter, but a game high 15-point quarter from the Lancers chipped into the visitors' lead slightly. The Lords only scored seven points in the final quarter, making their defensive game vital to holding onto their lead.
With four steals in the fourth, the Lords were able to slow down the Lancers. The Lords led 50-44 in the final three and a half minutes before a pair of free throws put the Lancers within four. Chelsea Taylor hit a jump shot with 2:52 left to make it a one possession game. The Lancers were awarded two more free throws with 2:13 to go, draining only one to make it 50-49.
Durham hit one more free throw to extend the lead to two points, but the defence stepped up and shut the hosts out for the remainder of the game to hold on for the win.
Kendra Oliver (Ajax, ON) led the team in points with 12, while Brianna Morrison (Oshawa, ON) recorded nine points.
Onika Leveridge (Scarborough, ON) grabbed 13 rebounds, with nine on the offensive side of the ball. Hannah Heimonen (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) and Hannah Oke (Brooklin, ON) each grabbed seven boards for a team total of 48.
The Lords go on the road on Tuesday for their second meeting of the season against the Seneca Sting at 6:00 PM.
