PETERBOROUGH, ON – In a night with five sets almost as close as anybody could imagine, the Durham Lords men's volleyball team fell 3-2 against the Fleming Knights on the road.
Fleming led for the majority of the opening frame, with Durham constantly on their tails. The Lords could only play catch up for so long however, as the Knights took the first set in a tightly contested 25-21 battle.
The second set would be even closer. With the Lords leading 23-20 and their eyes set on tying up the match, Fleming scored five unanswered points to take the second set 25-23.
The Lords not only avoided the sweep but came back to tie the match and force with a fifth and final set with identical 25-21 score lines in the third and the fourth.
Momentum was on the visitors' side for much of the fifth set. Never more than a few points separating the two sides, Durham saw themselves with a 13-11 lead late in the fifth. Fleming put themselves a head 14-13 and a hit from the Lords that saw the ball ride the net out of bounds would end the evening.
Fleming ultimately won in five sets, with no frame being won by more than four points for either side.
Nandor Gallo (Oshawa, ON) and William Egan (Cobden, ON) both hit for double-digit kills with 14 and 10, respectively. Michael Penney (Whitby, ON) was not far off with nine, while Josh Padmore (Hamilton, ON) finished with eight.
Of 45 assists tallied for the lords in the match, Kyle Travis (Courtice, ON) generated 41 of them. He also served the only ace for the Lords on the evening.
Aidan Carne (Stoney Creek, ON) was a force defensively, finishing with nine digs, a team-leading total one ahead of Egan's eight.
The Lords return home for Bell Let's Talk night on Thursday, January 26 against the Loyalist Lancers.
