PETERBOROUGH, ON – The Durham Lords women's volleyball team improve to 12-0 on the season with a three-set win at Fleming College on Thursday evening, their fifth consecutive sweep dating back to November 19th, 2022.
Assistant Coach Cassidy Nicholson-Clarke took over head coaching duties for the night as part of her second year of participation in the CCAA's Female Apprentice Coach Program (FACP).
A kill by Katie Stewart (Gananoque, ON) in the first set put the Lords ahead with a commanding 8-0 lead and the visitors did not look back, finding themselves up 23-4 late in the set. Fleming earned a trio of points, but a pair more from the Lords gave Durham a first set victory by a 25-7 score.
Fleming forced their closest set of the evening in the second, scoring 12 points but still fell behind 25-12. The Lords finished the evening off with a quick third set, winning 25-9.
Jessica Joensen (Brooklin, ON) smashed 10 kills across three sets, while Stewart and Amanda Larsen (Toronto, ON) each accounted for five kills in two sets played. The Lords generated a total of 23 assists, 14 from Jill Batsford (Kingston, ON) and nine from Brooke Young (Chestermere, AB).
At the service line, Cassidy Unrau (Port Coquitlam, BC) served four aces and Stewart served three, while Tia Chang (Markham, ON) and Samantha Payne (West Kelowna, BC) registered a pair.
Durham grabbed six points at the net, with a pair of blocks from Larsen, and a block from Jessie Anatol (Ajax, ON), Young, Chang and Joensen.
The Lords return home for their first match of the calendar year at the CRWC, hosting the Loyalist Lancers next Thursday at 6:00 PM for their annual Bell Let's Talk night.
