OSHAWA, ON - With a 6-2 win against the St. Lawrence Surge at Vaso's Field on Wednesday evening, the Durham College women's soccer team advance through the qualifiers to the quarterfinals.
Jessica Ferreira (Ajax, ON), who scored three goals in the regular season, opened the scoring just short of three minutes in to give the Lords an early lead.Â
In the 20th minute, Erin Michalicka (Pickering, ON) fed the ball through to Erika Bjorgum (Kingman, AB) who found the back of the net to double the lead. Chloe Hercia (Oshawa, ON) added a third in the 34th minute to go up 3-0.
Shortly before the halftime break, the Surge finally put themselves on the board to cut their deficit down to two.
Jaime Pye (Oshawa, ON) began the second half with a bang, scoring only 38 seconds in off of a long free kick taken by Shelby Khan (Oakville, ON). She re-directed it in the box to put it past the goalkeeper and restore a three goal lead.
In an effort to keep their season alive, the Surge scored another just over the one hour mark despite Kelsa O'Donoghue (Ajax, ON) getting a hand on it.
Durham scored two goals in a couple of minutes to add to their lead with Hercia and Bjorgum both scoring their second of the match. For Hercia, that was the first two goals of the defenders OCAA season.
Bjorgum and Sage Thomas-Roberts (Toronto, ON) contributed a combined eight shot attempts in the match, outshooting the Surge 19-6 in total.
The Lords are back at home for a quarterfinal match on Saturday, October 21 at 3:00 PM against the Mohawk Mountaineers.
