Painter picks up fourth win as Lords sweep Huskies

OSHAWA, ON - Hosting the George Brown Huskies for a doubleheader at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium, the Lords won both to improve to 13-3 on the season.

Boasting an 11-3 record coming into the day, the Lords went ahead in the second inning off the bat of Cruz Lopez (Brooklin, ON) who sent the ball flying over the outfield wall with Griffin McMillan (Bowmanville, ON) on base.

Later in the inning up 2-0, Nolan Hartley (Oshawa, ON) stole second after walking before Zach Rivers (Oshawa, ON) hit a long single to send Hartley rounding third to home - putting the Lords up by three.

In the bottom of the fifth, Cole Cote (Welland, ON) flied out to centre field and it was enough to send Ryan Mattes (Whitby, ON) in for the score.

The Huskies faced a four run deficit with the game on the line in the top of the seventh and attempted a comeback, scoring three runs on three hits. Their comeback attempt fell short as the Lords won 4-3.

Nick King (Whitby, ON) threw 102 pitches from the mound in 6.0 innings, striking out seven batters and allowing no runs on two hits.

Durham recorded six hits in the game from six different batters. Particularly, Lopez finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate with a run and two RBI's.

Picking up where they left off, the Huskies went ahead early in the second game with two runs in the first inning, as well as two runs in the second to put them ahead 4-1.

Durham's bats came to life in the bottom of the second, as Lopez, Hartley and Aaron Sprague (Oshawa, ON) all scored to put Durham ahead by one.

After adding two more runs in the third inning, things exploded in the bottom of the fourth as the Lords scored nine runs, including two by Mattes in the same inning, to take a commanding 16-4 lead.

George Brown managed to add one more to the scoreboard in the fifth but couldn't do enough to avert the fifth inning mercy rule.

Jackson Painter (Whitby, ON) picked up the win for the Lords, striking out three batters over 3.1 innings and allowing only a single run. Painter now ties his teammate King for the league lead in wins with four. Mattes and Lopez combined for six runs in the game.

The Lords wrap up their regular season campaign on Tuesday, October 10 against the Humber Hawks at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium. Graduating seniors will be recognized prior to the start of the first game, which is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
