Lords Alum Eddie Borutskie Takes Game Overseas

OSHAWA, Ont. - For Eddie Borutskie, opportunity didn't knock, it sent a fastball across the plate. After four seasons with Durham College, Borutskie is taking his game across the Atlantic with the Centurions Wels in Austria, a move that marks a new chapter built on years of steady growth and the lessons learned as a Durham Lord.

"It was three years ago when I was first introduced to baseball overseas through 'The North'" Borutskie said. "Huge shoutout to those guys because they really opened up my world to the possibilities of playing overseas."

The dream became real thanks to Baseball Jobs Overseas, an organization that helped connect Borutskie to the Centurions and turn curiosity into a contract.

Before international ball was on the radar, Durham College was home. For Borutskie, those four seasons were about more than statistics, they were about belonging.

"Personally it was incredible. Some of the best time spent anywhere," he said. "It didn't matter where — whether it was playing in games, being on the team bus, sharing a hotel room with Smitty, or going to other teams' games to show support. Durham will truly hold a special place in my heart for me for a very long time."

That sense of community was matched by a coaching staff that believed in his potential and pushed him to reach it.

"The coaching staff was a huge help in my development," Borutskie said. "I'd like to personally thank Scottie, Neale, Marty and Sammy for all helping me get to this point in my career. Without them I would not be where I am today."

Now, as he prepares to suit up in Austria, Borutskie's excitement is matched by a sense of adventure. "What I'm most looking forward to is the opportunity to travel and go see the world," he said. "I'm specifically really looking forward to going to Switzerland."

But with new horizons come new hurdles. He notes that the biggest adjustment that he has to make being in a new country is to get used to new cultural norms and focus on learning a new language. He also recognizes the difficulty of being away from his family and friends, as well as his dogs.

For younger athletes dreaming of their own next step, Borutskie keeps it simple.

"Be consistent and be patient," he said. "Show up every day and put in a consistent effort and the results will come. Don't worry about what is happening externally and try to focus on what you can control internally."

It's the kind of steady mindset that carried him through long bus rides, late-night practices, and now, a leap to a new continent — proof that when you put in the work, the game has a way of opening doors.
