OSHAWA, ON - Finishing off a second match in as many days, the Durham College women's volleyball team went the distance against the La Cité Coyotes, winning in five sets.
La Cité put together a strong start on the road, scoring the first three points of the afternoon to take an early lead. Eventually tied 6-6, the Lords went on a 14-7 run to create separation and take control of the opening set, which Durham would win 25-17.
The second set was the longest of the season for the Lords, taking nearly 35 minutes to complete. It was tightly contested all the way through, so much so that with a 24-24 score line the match required further serves. The back-and-forth nature of the set would continue to be the case, well into the 30s when an attack error from the hosts, followed by a service ace from the Coyotes won them the set 34-32.
Tied 1-1 on the afternoon, Durham won the third set 25-20 before La Cité took the fourth set 25-18 to force a fifth tiebreaker set.
After being tied 5-5 in the fifth set, Durham pulled away with six consecutive points to take a six point lead and eventually go on to win the set 15-10 and the take the best-of-five afternoon in five sets.
The length of the match saw three Lords reach double-digit territory for kills. Aislinn Pedersen (Hamilton, ON) led the way with 13 kills on 45 total attempts to go along with six digs, one assist, a block and a service ace.
Chelsea Oke (Brooklin, ON) and Chanel Ethier (Ottawa, ON) each registered 10 kills. Ethier added 13Â digs and an assist, while Oke had two service aces and 20Â digs.
Brooke Young (Chestermere, AB) finished the day with 29 assists in four sets played, while Stefanie Ciz (Cambridge, ON) posted 17 assists across parts of three sets.
Jenna MacFarlane (Fredericton, NB) impressed with 18Â digs, while Jayde Smyth (Canmore, AB) added seven.
Amanda Larsen (Toronto, ON) finished the day with seven kills and a pair of blocks, while Tia Chang (Markham, ON) led the way at the net with four blocks.
The Lords are back on the court on Thursday, November 23 at 6:00 PM against the Centennial Colts. It will be their final home appearance before the holiday break so be sure to catch them at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Centre one last time before 2024!
