OSHAWA, ON - The Durham College women's basketball team suffered a 56-50 loss to the Georgian Grizzlies on Tuesday at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Centre.
Georgian went ahead 4-0 early to open the scoring before Emma Bergen (La Crete, AB) hit a free throw 3:22 into the first quarter and followed it up with a layup shortly after to put the Lords on the board. Onika Leveridge (Scarborough, ON) had a three-point play of her own less than a minute later with a layup and an ensuing free throw to take the lead.
In the second quarter, the Lords continued their dominance in the paint with 11 rebounds to give themselves every opportunity to keep or take possession and stay close on the scoreboard. Going into halftime, the Grizzlies led 25-22.
Following the halftime break, Georgian scored a game-high 23 points in the third quarter to create some separation and take a double-digit lead over the hosts through three quarters of play.
Durham suffocated the Grizzlies defensively in the fourth quarter, only allowing eight points and learning from their mistakes in the previous frame. The Lords held Georgian to shooting 3-for-21 in the quarter. This was enough to chip away a little bit at the deficit, but not enough to generate a late-game comeback.
Bergen finished the night with a double-double, leading the Lords in points with 17 and rebounds with 11.
Emily Glendinning (Plattsville, ON) dropped 12 points and picked up four rebounds. Leveridge was in double-digit territory with 10 rebounds, also scoring seven points.
Telia Campbell (Pickering, ON) stood out in 40 minutes of play, posting eight points and eight rebounds with two steals and a pair of assists.
The Lords had a greater collective shooting average than the Grizzlies (32.2% - 29.9%), however the Grizzlies generated nearly 20 more shot attempts.
Durham will continue to look for their first win of the season on Friday evening at 6:00 PM as they host the Centennial Colts.
