Hard work pays off as Lords come back for first win

OSHAWA, ON - The Durham College women's basketball team earned their first win of the season on Friday night, defeating the visiting Centennial Colts 66-65.

Centennial was off to a hot start to the game, going on a 5-0 run in the opening 2:51 before Telia Campbell (Pickering, ON) put the Lords on the board. The Lords kept it close in the quarter, trailing 22-17 after 10 minutes.

In the second quarter, the Colts created lots of separation on the scoreboard. The visitors had two players combine for 16 points as the team outscored the Lords collectively by 10 in the frame. Struggling to find their rhythm, Durham trailed 44-29 going into halftime.

Whatever was said in the locker room at halftime had an effect on the game as the Lords came out flying, going on a 6-0 run to open the second half. Emma Bergen (La Crete, AB) had 12 points in the third quarter, helping cut the deficit nearly in half.

Durham had their strongest defensive quarter in the fourth, holding the Colts to only eight points as they continued to chip away from behind.

A made free throw from Bergen with 1:47 left gave the Lords their first lead since the first quarter and the team held it down, defeating the Colts by one point.

Bergen finished the night with 35 points, nine rebounds and two assists for the Lords in 37 minutes of play.

Emily Glendinning (Plattsville, ON) registered 20 points and 13 rebounds on the scoresheet, along with four assists and a trio of steals.

Camryn Wood (Uxbridge, ON) was a force in the paint with 10 rebounds and was the leading playmaker with seven assists.

The Lords scored more than half of their points in the paint and benefited from a 41.4% free throw percentage. Three point shots also made the difference, while Durham shot 27.8% the Colts were 1-for-23.

Durham will look to build on this win with a trip to the nation's capital on Saturday, November 18 for a 4:00 PM tip-off against the Algonquin Wolves.
