Georgian spoils fall semester finale

BARRIE, ON - Despite a tight first half, the Georgian Grizzlies spoiled the final women's basketball game of the fall semester as the Lords fell 65-49.

Things didn't look promising for the visitors in the early minutes after back-to-back three point shots put the Grizzlies up 6-0 in the first three minutes and took an eventual 12-2 lead through the first quarter.

Suddenly, the Lords were just draining shots with Emma Bergen (La Crete, AB) and Camryn Wood (Uxbridge, ON) hitting a combined five shots in a row to tie the game at 12 with a refusal to let the score get out of hand. After 10 minutes of play, the Grizzlies led 21-17.

The second quarter was a low-scoring affair, with only a combined 15-points in the frame. The score favoured Durham, who scored nine of those points, to bring the game within one as they only trailed 27-26 going into halftime.

Bergen and Emily Glendinning (Plattsville, ON) hit back-to-back shots in the third quarter to open the second half by taking over the lead in the first minute before Georgian went on a 10-1 run to take the lead back. The Grizzlies doubled their visitors points in the quarter, taking a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter.

Outscoring the Grizzlies 10-6 in the first 2:57 of the fourth quarter provided some hope for the Lords to chip away at their deficit, however a 20-point quarter gave the Grizzlies other ideas as they eventually led by 16 when the final buzzer sounded.

The Lords benefited from a 40.4% shooting percentage in the game, although Georgian's sheer number of shot attempts helped contribute to their win, as well as their ability to score off of Durham's turnovers.

Bergen finished the night with 19 points, seven rebounds and a steal. Glendinning also stood out with 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists and a block.

Wood had a season-high six points, as well as seven rebounds which was her second highest total of the season.

This game marked the end of the fall semester in the regular season and the Lords will be back on the court at home on Tuesday, January 16 against the George Brown Huskies at 6:00 PM.
