OSHAWA, ON - The Durham College women's basketball team kick off the winter semester in a favourable way, defeating the George Brown Huskies 74-70.
Emma Bergen (La Crete, AB) broke the ice very early in the game, making a layup only six seconds into the contest. After that, it would be nearly three more minutes until either side could add to the scoring, when Bergen made back-to-back layups to put the Lords ahead 6-0.
25 seconds shy of the halfway point in the opening frame, the Huskies made a pair of free throws to get on the board for the first time but Camryn Wood (Uxbridge, ON) had an almost immediate response to put the Lords back up by six.
All in all, the Lords held George Brown to only eight points in the first quarter while scoring 13 of their own to take a five-point lead into the second quarter.
Telia Campbell (Pickering, ON) was first on the board in the second quarter with a layup before Emily Glendinning (Plattsville, ON) sunk a three-point shot to give the Lords a double-digit lead for the first time on the evening.
George Brown began to claw back, finding themselves within four points with less than four minutes left in the half.Â
The two teams went back-and-forth for the rest of the third quarter, until the former Durham Lord Shay Littman scored four points in the final 28 seconds of the half to make it a two-point game. After 20 minutes of play, the Lords led 27-25.
Coming out of halftime, the third quarter looked to be a strong one for the Lords at the start. Through the first 3:25, Durham went on an 8-2 run to extend their lead to nine.
Fortunes changed throughout the quarter as George Brown responded with a 14-3 run of their own, eventually taking their first lead of the game with 2:24 to go in the third quarter as the scoreboard read 41-40.
With the Huskies leading 49-47 to end the third quarter, both teams had their highest offensive output of the game to that point with the Huskies scoring 24 and the Lords adding 20.
Durham would continue to absolutely pile on the scoring, adding 27 points in the fourth quarter while holding George Brown to only 21. This allowed the Lords to take the lead again and they would not look back.Â
Bergen went off in the fourth quarter, shooting 6-for-7 for a total of 12 points.
Looking at the entirety of the game, Bergen was the standout performer with a double-double, putting up 30 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, including seven in the offensive end to generate second chance points. This was an area where the Lords greatly benefited, scoring 20 points off of second chance opportunities.
Onika Leveridge (Scarborough, ON) was one point short of a double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing 10 boards. Opposite of Bergen, Leveridge jumped for seven rebounds in the defensive end - allowing the Lords to take back possession.
Glendinning racked up 16 points, thanks in part to four buckets dropped from beyond the arc. Campbell finished the night with 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
The Lords return to the court this coming Saturday on January 20th in Scarborough against the Centennial Colts at 1:00 PM.
