HAMILTON, ON - The Durham Lords men's volleyball team saw their season come to an end at Mohawk College, falling in the OCAA Championship qualifying match.
Mohawk worked for an early lead in the first set, earning six of the first eight points scored in the match. For the majority of the set, the Lords trailed by an average of five points at any given time and that would not change the closer that Mohawk got to the coveted 25 total.Â
The Mountaineers finished the first set on a 5-2 run to take the frame 25-17.
Switching sides of the court for the second set, the Mountaineers once again went out in front but by a lesser margin. Durham consistently trailed by a margin of one or two in the early minutes and kept the set within reach.
This would be until the score line read 8-6, the Mountaineers went on a 4-0 run to double Durham's score and force a timeout to slow things down.
The timeout changed the tides for a while with the Lords scoring seven of the next 11 points to bring the set back within three.Â
Mohawk shifted the momentum one last time and it would be enough to take the second set 25-18.
Durham had an early lead in the third set but again found themselves trailing by a small handful of points throughout most of the set.
A small run three quarters of the way through was all the Mountaineers needed to give themselves a comfortable lead and create a deficit that was too steep for the Lords to climb out of.
Ultimately, Mohawk won the third set 25-18 to win the match.
As the season comes to its conclusion, the Lords coaching staff will continue an active recruiting season.Â
